Rich - sorry for posting off topic - but you also appear in the list I am about to post..
DN & Deia in the Brainstorm Tribe noted their profiles and Deia's noted her friends list is on a site external to tribe. Several members of this tribe are also there.. You may not care.. you may care a lot.. but there is a post in Brainstorm about this.. brainstorm.tribe.net/thread/...06c281ed which takes you to ex.plode.us/friends/381934/ use their search function to see if you're there.. if your're not happy about it - register that either in this thread or preferably in the Brainstorm Tribe here brainstorm.tribe.net/thread/...23c1c9cb

Re: Your details on Explode ?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 9:59 PMHoly shit! Me no likey! Me no likey at all!
I never wanted to have to avoid putting up pictures of the real me, or saying what I really wanted to say. I figgered, if someone's on tribe (even just browsing), they're prolly gonna "get it." Get it _enough_ anyway.
This is some ol' bullshit and I feel helpless after reading that thread. -

Re: Your details on Explode ?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 10:48 PMAbout Explode
Explode is a social search tool devised by Curverider. What you see here is only the beginning, our idea is to build an application that acts like the glue between social networks; it is all about breaking down silos of active and opening up the web using open standards.
If you would like to contact us, please use the Curverider contact form.
FAQ
Why do I appear in Explode?
Explode is a search engine that gets its data from information that has been made publically available. Our crawlers respect robot.txt and we do not attempt to gather any infomration that has been marked as anything other than 'public'.
Therefore, if you appear in an Explode search, this is because you have made your information available to the public. -

So now if I can just figure out how to make my profile 'Friends Only'...Is Tribe really public? I guess you can access the profiles from the website without being a member (I thought not, I was wrong) maybe this should change? -

Re: Your details on Explode ?
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 12:24 AMOh for fuck sake, I found me.
I think it goes by your tribe handle. I have a different one than my name on here. I got it when I was trying out tribe chat , so this wasn't so long ago this was grabbed. And its a different picture, one I had a little bit ago.
I never figured out tribe chat.
Darren is going to wake up to some pretty irate people this morning.

Re: Your details on Explode ?
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 6:26 AMOh yeah, Tribe is really public. If you ever have a legal issue you might end up finding that out the hard way. Let me tell you it is a trip seeing your Tribe info admitted as evidence. Of course for me it didn't turn out to be any big deal after all but it was still a weird weird feeling. -

cooties. BAD cooties
Sat, March 1, 2008 - 11:20 AMElaine, I am so relieved.
At least there are two of us who are apparently so seething with cooties that WE ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE ON TRIBE WHOSE INFORMATION HAS NOT BEEN CROSS POSTED. How did we become such pariahs?
Will the information on our utter lack of social acceptance ALSO be available somewhere? Will it be cross posted to match.com, screwing our chances of a date for EVER?
Has this got anything to do with the sub-prime mortgage crisis?
Can we get help?
I'm calling my congress woman for advice.
And my therapist.
And the local bar (sob). -

Sat, March 1, 2008 - 2:06 PMAs Wild points out, I did find me, however it was by another name than this particular one. Though it's a nickname I use elsewhere, not too hard to figure out if you know me.

Re: Your details on Explode ?
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 9:51 AMHmmm, that is curious.
Is it all *that* different from Google, though?
I mean, your tribes and profile n stuff (unless they've been designated "private" tribes, or "friends only" content in your profile) turn up in Google searches, you know.
I'm not sure if it's all that bad. Yeah, your boss and neighbors are going to learn about your weird kink or your addiction to distasteful porn, but you know what? Nobody's going to be all that surprised.
My question: what kind of URL ends in ".us"?
What does that designate?

Re: Your details on Explode ?
Sat, March 1, 2008 - 8:09 PMI see that if you list your age, your exact birthdate is viewable by clicking the "FOAF" thingy.
That's a breach of confidentiality.
But that's something on your Tribe profile, not on the Explode site.
"FOAF" should be voluntary - you should be able to switch it on or off, (as the fellow said on that thread.)
Somebody said that blog posts made on Tribe were visible via Explode, but I didn't see that that was so. Is it?
I think Explode just harvests your user icon (or avatar, as some would have it) and the icons (or avatars) of those on your friends list.
Or at least that's all I saw.
What if somebody creates a search engine that specifically just accesses blogs on multiple "social networking" sites, like Tribe, MySpace, FaceBook, Ning, etc., etc. Would that be a bad thing? (Does such a thing already exist for LiveJournal, Blogspot, etc. ?)
There was a site called ListPic that figured out how to reproduce only the pictures from all the ads on Craigslist. So you could view only the pictures - the guy's "casual encounters" ads, just for an example, were a parade of penises when viewed on ListPic. Listpic gave the title of the ad below the picture, and when you clicked on the picture the text would appear in a small pop-up box.
It was pretty great!
But Craigslist blocked it somehow, whether electronically (writing code, that is) or legally I'm not sure.

Re: Your details on Explode ?
Sat, March 1, 2008 - 8:13 PMDarren said something on the brainstorming thread about blocking this somehow. Probs with the FOAF thingee. -
-
Re: Your details on Explode ?
Sun, March 2, 2008 - 10:04 AMWas the whole idea behind that (FOAF) that your friends on MySpace (or whereever) could check out your friends on Tribe (or whereever), and then maybe they'd become friends themselves ... or something?
I think it was an attempt to go cross-platform on the various "social networking" sites to share one small group of files (namely, the 'friends module')
They wanted to include age info in the FOAF so that you could hit on a stranger of the appropriate age group for you, whatever you may conceive that to be, I suppose.
I'm still not sure how I feel about my Tribe user picture appearing on sites that harvest only pictures like that.

Fri, February 29, 2008 - 10:02 AM>My question: what kind of URL ends in ".us"?
>What does that designate? <
Americans, apparently www.nic.us/
The big difference from Google, that I see, is that this is concentrated on neworking sites only. IOW if you Google FIDO, you are going to go through pages of dogs before ever possibly finding me. On this it might be quicker (though I didn't find myself yet.)
I like the idea that the more personal info we know about eachother, the less shocking it will be, but I don't know if it is true in fuctional reality. -
-

Fri, February 29, 2008 - 4:17 PMBloke alerted me to the fact that I am there and so I came in here and changed what appears on my profile page - like Deleting the 'Module' that lists everything I have been saying for the last 3 years LOL :P

Re: Your details on Explode ?
Sun, March 2, 2008 - 10:22 AMThat is interesting; by typing in whatever zipcode you want, like so: "www.00000.us", and neat little map of that zip code pops up, along with some area info.
I agree with you about Google being bigger and broader, but soon there will be advanced searches in Google where you can limit the results to only certain types of sites. Right now it is a little too big batch.
Would that be a bad thing?
What if I wanted to find you and used a site like Explode, rather than sorting through pages of Google search results - is that bad?
The only info you should be able to get off of Explode is your username and user icon (or avatar), and the icons or avatars of people on your friends list. And possibly your hometown/zipcode.
No other pictures or info are shared.
I'm not that comfortable with my Tribe user picture appearing on another site, sort of out of context, as it were.
On the other hand, I do like the idea of Tribe being searchable by a variety of search engines.
The key, as was said in the Brainstroming tribe's thread, is to make participation in the FOAF file-sharing thingy voluntary.

Re: Your details on Explode ?
Sat, March 1, 2008 - 9:01 AMI'm always a little surprised when these issues come up because the situation is the same as it's ever been. If you don't want your mom/spouse/lover/employer/the man/etc. to know about it, don't put it online! "Private" tribes and "friends only" posts are NOT private - all it takes is for one person with access to spread your shit all over the place. Yeah, that realization can have a chilling effect, but pretending otherwise can be a lot worse in the long run... -

Wed, March 5, 2008 - 10:01 AMi linked to a specific post.
and if you don't care about a bug in the FOAF that gives latitude and
longitude coordinates to your exact location,
well..........
-
-
Re: Your details on Explode ?
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 7:00 PMI believe that latitude and longitude correspond to the zip code you listed when you signed up on Tribe.
For instance, my FOAF lat/long shows as the dead center of my zip code area. (If I happened to live right there near the center, I'd think it was much more accurate!)
My friend's lat/long show up as the city that she lived in when she signed up, though she moved from there years ago now.
That could still be too much info for some folks' comfort, though. -
-
Re: Your details on Explode ?
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 7:14 PMI think a way to test this would be to see if the lat/long info in the FOAF is the same for two people who live within the same zip code, but at different residences.
I would give this a shot, but I don't know anyone on Tribe who lives within my zip code to compare lat/long info with.

Re: Your details on Explode ?
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 11:51 AMit does show blog posts! not everyone's - yet - seems to be that it shows your friends' blog posts but not yours - I decided to stop looking around there because I have a feeling that if you search for someone, the thing goes out and searches for them too -- so if you search for yourself, and formerly it had no interest in you, it may then take an interest. (whispers) Is this paranoid?

Re: Your details on Explode ?
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 6:46 AMThe only bug is that tribe didn't do a very good job of implementing FOAF - they didn't have to include the "based_near" property info, but they did. I don't consider that a bug, I consider it poor design.
