My eyes actually teared

I have known Eric for almost 6 months. Until last week I did not know he was the chef on the Alaska Ranger

To me this is a lesson on both heroism and humility. When I asked him tonight why he did it, why he never told me, his response was you do what you have to do.

I have never before had a hero in my life. Today Eric Haynes is my hero. I am blessed to be a part of his life.

Wow, that is a story! Courage and bravery. And I was gripped by the tale right to the end wanting to know how each person survived or not.

I find it difficult when corporations deliberately do not take care of people who've been hurt like this. The Post Traumatic Stress could easily become a life-long disorder for these men. The medical care alone for counseling and prescriptions to get through the initial hard times should be covered by some sort of disability pension from the corporation that benefitted from their labour. Or possibly it is a function of government to provide a disability pension and medical care for a period of a couple years until treatment is effective and the men can hold down a stable job.

I don't know where the responsibility lies but it seems that these men are left adrift in their lives with a reduced ability to earn a living and potentially monumental medical bills. Mental health issues are not well understood in our society and PTSD is especially misunderstood. With more and more veterans returning from Iraq as well, the mental health system needs an overhaul to be able to care for these men also.

It is possible that the corporation has done something for the men but it was not adequately discussed in the story. I may be speaking out of turn with my complaint however the corporation is fighting the lawsuit brought by the men who chose not to accept the $25,000 payment or the $50,000 payment. A corporation that would fight that kind of lawsuit is unlikely to be the benevolent sort that would offer medical or disability pension to survivors of this event.

I will have to find out for ya on the last point Deb. My room mate is tutoring him in math so the relationship I have with him is becoming closer to the point that I am likely to get a straight answer from him.

The problem is many of those boats out of dutch harbor have no right to be on the seas let alone in an area like the Bering straight. I have known a number of guys that work those boats. I general the life cycle is about 2 years working fishing then guys are the fuck outta there this is some insight as to why,

How fortunate for you to get to know and understand someone who has lived through this nightmare.

The lack of government enforcement of safety regulations leaves workers in a precarious situation. The lack of drills for example resulted in the loss of one of the lifeboats in this situation.

I tried to find a date that this tragedy occurred but the article merely mentioned Easter. How long ago was this?

I do hope your friend is able to integrate and process this experience in a way that will not have a lasting negative affect on his life.

It went down last spring. He seems to be doing pretty well. I think I understand a bit more his motivation for going back to school and getting his certifications. It will allow him to possibly qualify as an executive chef at one of the various properties down here in Vegas
