So apparently many Jews and Muslims find the disease name "Swine Flu" offensive because of the association with pigs which is prohibited in their religions so the deputy health minister in Israel has proposed that they call it "Mexican Flu." Hilarious! (in a most offensive way of course)
So on the news this morning I heard that the Mexican ambassador to Israel has already complained that they are very offended that Israel thought it fit to exchange "Swine" for "Mexican."
Why does this make me laugh so much?
It is bloody awful but sort of reminds me of something I'd see in a Monty Python sketch.

Re: You can't make this shit up
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 9:21 AMhehehe
well, i can tell you that it makes ME laugh because all the desperate
stretches toward over-PC'ing *everything*, especially when trying to span
various cultural differences, is funny in the most offensive-but-hilarious
python-esque of ways.
apparently the Mexican ambassador's offense was enough to withdraw
the idea though. jta.org/news/article/2...anged-in-israel -

Re: You can't make this shit up
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 9:25 AMAwww that is too bad. My husband and I were just joking that Israel should just go for broke and call it "Dirty Wetback Flu." Surely that wouldn't offend anyone?
It is just too funny to me. You'd think Israel of all countries would be more aware of not pissing off countries that they have good relations with.

Re: You can't make this shit up
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 9:39 AMUh... right. Because everyone would feel MUCH better about contracting the disease if it didn't have a negative association with their religion. -
-
Re: You can't make this shit up
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 9:41 AMYes, the offensive part of the disease is its name being associated with pigs not its possible outcome of death. -
-
Re: You can't make this shit up
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 9:44 AMWe're agreed then: the name of this disease should be officially changed to "Fuzzy Puppy Flu".
Panic averted! YAY. -

Re: You can't make this shit up
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 12:56 PMBut - pigs have a negative association in Judaism/Islam because they are "unclean" animals. What's more unclean than spreading disease? If anything, calling it "swine flu" shows the prohibition to be correct. I would think the health minister would be happy to say," look, we were right. Pigs are unclean!"

Re: You can't make this shit up
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 1:40 PMWell, this stupid topic actually yields an interesting question:
Is there anything that is universally liked? Oxygen, maybe? -
-
Re: You can't make this shit up
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 1:48 PMWell, I would like to say "bacon".
I think everyone likes a properly working digestive system.

Re: You can't make this shit up
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 1:50 PMOxygen flu?
Hmm that almost sounds like the bends. Would that piss off divers? -

Re: You can't make this shit up
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 1:53 PMRe: Oxygen Flu
In hindsight, I realize this suggestion is plant-ist, as they rely on hydrogen dioxide and would consider oxygen a waste product - equivalent to poop, to us. Sigh. My apologies to any plants I may have offended. -

Re: You can't make this shit up
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 2:04 PMYou know, those countries are going about this renaming thing all wrong. Instead of calling it the "mexican flu", we really should be calling the "Taco flu".
I mean, who doesn't like a taco? Soulless bastards, that's who, the kind who hate our freedoms to eat tacos. -

Re: You can't make this shit up
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 8:44 PMWow, so I hear some shmuck read this thread and interpreted it as racist against Mexicans. I find that interesting as well as amusing. Poor thing must not understand the subtleties of some humor. Could be that there is some sort of mental defect interfering with his or her comprehension.
