This is very disturbing given that none of these primates are monkeys- they're all lemurs; they are bot native to Puerto Rico (only found in Madagascar) so they couldn't have been caught there and the guy running the refuge runs a zoo and somehow doesn't know the difference between a prosimian and a monkey. Apparently, the Florida Wildlife Commission didn't notice either. I'm not even a zoology major, WTF is going on here?

Did they use some stock footage for that story or something? Those are clearly lemurs and not even all the same kind of lemurs. Some were obviously ring tail and the others I think were ruffed lemurs. They definitely were not Patas monkeys. My son has an encyclopedia of primates that he is obsessed with and makes me read it to him every single night. Because of that I actually do know what a Patas monkey looks like.

Ha! True, Elaine... Florida is always a source of some embarrassment.

I'm pretty sure that's actual footage. The foliage is totally Florida.

You're right. That is truly bizzare that someone who runs a zoo doesn't know that. And what is more Patas monkeys are from East Africa. Definitely not Puerto Rico.

I was thinking maybe some guy down at the news station just grabbed footage they already had in stock because maybe they didn't get any shots of the real creatures and didn't know that lemurs aren't monkeys. I could forgive a news PA for being stupid when it comes to zoological matters but not the guy who runs the zoo.

On behalf of the state i am forced to live in against my will, (or budget, ) id like to apologize for the aforementioned stupidity. Most floridians wouldnt know the difference between a monkey and a gorilla, or their ass from a hole in the ground, for that matter.
    AAAAAARRRRRRGGGHHHH!!! I HATE THIS STATE!!

sigh, i really do. morons, the lot of them.

You know the other thing that bugs me about this story? The guy states that water is a natural barrier for primates. That is mostly true but not absolutely true. There are some primates that are quite happy to enter the water. Also some apes have been known to devise ways to get across the water. He seems to have gone on a blanket assumption instead of actually researching the specific animals that were in his care.

I was bothered by that as well, Yuni. Baboons walk in water all the time and some monkeys hang out in hot springs. Discounting the individual behaviors of an animal despite general rules is also foolish.

Apparently, monkeys escape all the time in Florida:

I just watched the Planet Earth documentary that showed monkeys swimming underwater for fun.

I cant believe some one hasn't call the zoo and the so called experts on their bull shit bunk.
