I find myself over at Facebook a lot these days. Its both a good place to find old long lost friends and to talk to people I see every day. It has quickly become a fairly easy route for promoting gigs and/or finding out what's going on in town.
Knowing my tendency to get timesucked into these sorts of things, I am pretty hesistent to check out Twitter. I feel it pulling me in but I figured I'd ask for some opinions in here before I open (another) pandora's box .
Do you tweet?

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Mon, March 16, 2009 - 12:14 AMI'm on facebook, best I can say about it is; it's nice to see all my highschool classmates.
Even The complete strangers Ive met here on Tribe are like Graduate School in intellect, wisdom, talent, art, variety, comedy and outside the box thought compared to the secondary school comments on FB.
Twitter I am interested in. From an Extreme Honesty POV, I believe journaling to a be very healthy component in honest living. Blogs are a good forum for this, but I don't use the blog here as much as would be healthy. If Twitter is what I believe it to be, it seems like a running stream-of-consiousness of 'mini-blogs'. If this gets people in the habit of journaling, then I am all for it!

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Mon, March 16, 2009 - 12:30 AMI do tweet and face book.
Twitter is microblogging for the most part.Easily abused by those who got to announce every latte they purchase, every bar they enter, every single fucking thing they do. I will sometimes drunk twitter, that can be interesting the next day, oy veh.
But it can be fun, and its easy to set the level of interaction you want with other people in your twitter network.

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 1:22 PMI am thoroughly hooked on facebook. And contrary to Dr. P. Dawgus's experiences, I have been having some outstanding converstions in several of the groups therein.
Twitter's neat, but I mostly use it when I'm too lazy to fully develop something for my blog. I post the heart of the idea then I have it out of my head without having the idea go wholly to waste. -

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 2:05 PMi use facebook, although i'm not active in any groups or anything...
its more a means of keeping in touch with friends and family that
are far away, knowing about upcoming events in town, etc.
i hear a lot about twitter but have never used it... i'm one of those
crazy old-schoolers that writes in a journal rather than an online blog,
and i don't need another online networking site. -

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 3:22 PMThere is so much frickin' spam on twitter. That really sucks.
I am a big fan of facebook. Its great for finding old friends and as a way to reach a lot of people at once. It generally is where I start promoting my shows now because if its the only thing I get to I know a lot of my local friends see the post.
Hey Nicole...track me down on FB if you can. -

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 6:02 PMI have never received one bit of spam on twitter, Rich... You might be doing it wrong. None of my friends get spam either. -
-
Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 6:20 PMRich, I checked who was following you on twitter and you have three random girl name spammers. Block them and you will be all good. They tend to sniff about new accounts for a bit . -

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Tue, March 24, 2009 - 9:13 PMI see them all the same as I do many of today's multitude of ways of losing one's privacy.
Basically the same as "identifying marks". Don't need any...
Killed my TV, keep the celly turned off, and never, ever give out my SSN. And "no, officer, I will refuse your search of my vehicle - even though I know you can keep me here until you can get a court order".
Go wake up a judge. I'll wait.

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 9:48 PMI have a Facebook profile.
I also have a Twitter profile.
To avoid information mis-crosses, my social networks of friends on both sites are relatively similar. As a result, I have my Twitter "status" auto-update to my Facebook "status." (Kills two birds with one stone, too.)
Twitter has many applications that help in filtering the status messages of those you follow: Tweetdeck, for example. Yes, it is easy to get overwhelmed with screens and screens. The various Twitter tools out there are available to manage this.
Hey, I see that now Tribe has a tool where an initial discussion post in a tribe can be "shared" and interfaced with Twitter. As Twitter only allows 140 characters to each post, I'm not sure how this will work but I'm curious to see how. -

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 2:22 PMI haven't used Twitter yet although FB has pretty much replaced tribe for me in keeping in touch with people I know. Seldom lof into tribe these days, I get frustrated too easily with technical *issues* -
-
Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 5:28 PMFacebook does seem more handy to me then twitter. It's especially useful to let friends who have moved to other cities know when you are performing locally. *W* -

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 7:23 PMI agree. BTW Rich, it was great to see you April 1st in Bend - loved the show. Hey, I just noticed tribe has share links at the top of the threads now for fb, twitter, etc. Has anyone used this feature? Looks like tribe is linking with all of the other social networks out there - just seems to confirm - the old tribe appears to be a thing of the past. -

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 9:24 AMI Saw that and its interesting.
B, you live in Oregon?
-
Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Sat, April 11, 2009 - 5:37 PMIt was great seeing you B and I'm glad you liked the show. While I'm on that topic the same band www.stephanieschneiderman.com will be playing San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, and Ashland Oregon in the next week. If you'd like more details contact me via a tribe message and the details will head your way...assuming you don't seem like a potentially crazy stalker.
Elaine, B used to live right here in Portland, now she is in Bend, and she's frickin' way cool in person.

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Sun, April 12, 2009 - 11:56 AMI spent a bit of time on Face-crack, then quit. Such a time suck. I'm an Aquarian - I love people and connections - you'd think I'd love it?
Ii find it too A.D.D.
I prefer my correspondence to be more intentional, not just a convenient 'howdy'.
I want to put energy into the people who take time to write me something more personal and intimate. I am also doing a bit computer job which requires me to be on this box about 10 hours a day, so although I live way out in the middle of nowhere, I've chosen NOT to do either Twitter or Facebook.
Hey, wait a minute = what am I doing HERE?????

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 12:48 AMDo I tweet? Way too much if you ask my wife. I posted 312 times back in the Fall '08. That's the most I have in one month. I love twitter. LOVE it. But it's also addictive, and in some ways the fact you are limited to 140 characters per tweet is both limiting and freshing. I tend to ramble, so twitter forces me to re-think my excessively verbosity into 140 character snippets. I also have tapered off my tweeting. It can, like any social media (or most ANYthing for that matter) be addictive. As I mentioned in my "I'm back, if only for a moment" rant, I have replace tribe with twitter the past year or so.
I like FaceBook too, way more than MySpace (god damn that flaming hunk O' shit lameass horrible interface and technical FUBARasity. Did I type that out loud? Oh my. Down skippy, down! (my evil twin, he gets out of control))
I tend to use Facebook as a way to stay connected with old friends, family I normally would not talk too other than at family reunions or weddings, and as a feed for my twitter babble (I too have my Facebook status updated from my twitter account)
Let twitter pull you in Rich. Try it for 30 days, and then quit cold turkey if needed. Or not. Twitter has replaced tribe as my main source of non-meatspace connection with people. It also is one of the best damn networking tools out there. I found a new job via people I met on twitter, as well as have made more connections with people in my area in 3 months on twitter than I did in 4 years of living here (I don't get out as much as many, and I tend to scare off the uninitiated, so factor that into my equation)

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Mon, May 4, 2009 - 1:46 AMI've been trying to tweet BEB. I'm gonna track you down through Elaine's twitter friends list and you. It seems there be lots to read that way.

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Mon, May 4, 2009 - 4:54 PMI use twitter as a public channel to mess with and keep track of my friends.
We used to have a text thing my friend put together a few years ago for all the friends in the group called "party alert": This was before twitter and we would use it to call out to people and pretty much find out where one another was drinking. Of course, we also used to it to talk to one another and announce things, and then it got kind of out of hand when people realized how much we could could mess with one another.
Good times.
So, when twitter came about, I was all " oh its's party alert gone global."

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Tue, May 5, 2009 - 9:17 AMI tried twitter... didn't dig the whole blurb thing. Also set up a face book... i am definitely more reserved there since checking face book and myspace has become standard procedure when checking on a job candidate... I also made the profile private so I find it very limiting. If anyone wants to find me there msg me cause I am not going to give out my real name on a public forum.

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Sun, May 10, 2009 - 5:37 PMI have been on Twitter for just 4 days and I already have 200+ people I am following and 153 that are following me. There are high quality people there and a lot of action. I get new messages to my home page almost every 1 or 2 minutes. I also like the fact that updates have to be brief. I also like getting updates from people like Al Gore, Byron Katie and so forth. Many well known people use Twitter. Also it is a paradise of great links. It is mostly about linking actually and building an audience. You can find me there at bruceterrell and find good people to follow in my "followers" section. . -

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Sun, May 10, 2009 - 8:03 PMI use Twitter to follow the latest news in the fields of fine arts, literature, music and the causes I care about. I don't use it to keep in touch with people. It seems to work pretty well for keeping up with the latest bits of info straight from the "horse's mouth". Plus, an app called 'TweetDeck' makes it super easy.

Re: Facebook? Twitter?
Sun, May 10, 2009 - 7:47 PMGosh I am such an old lady. I don't tweet or use facebook. I like tribe because we have actual conversations. I don't feel like poking people with cute little aps so facebook doesn't interest me and I'm not interested in hearing about everyone's every thought so no way is twitter a good place for me.
Maybe I'll feel differently when there is no more tribe.
