This has been circulating around the net over the past week or so and I wanted to share it here.
Sally Kerns, Oklahoma lawmaker, was recorded during a speech she thought was heard by a "small group" of 350 supporters behind closed doors. This is what she said...
"Homosexuality is a bigger threat to our nation than terrorism or Islam.” She continued that “According to God words, it is not the right kind of lifestyle….Gays are infiltrating city councils…. It’s deadly and its spreading, and it will destroy our young people, and it will destroy this nation.”
For the whole recording you can go to the following link on youtube:

I was impressed by a letter written in response to her words by a young man whose mother was killed in the terrorist attack on the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. He was stopped by a highway patrol man when trying to deliver his letter to Sally Kern but his Aunt has shared his words with the public...
Rep Kern:
On April 19, 1995, in Oklahoma City a terrorist detonated a bomb that killed my mother and 167 others. 19 children died that day. Had I not had the chicken pox that day, the body count would've likely have included one more. Over 800 other Oklahomans were injured that day and many of those still suffer through their permanent wounds.
That terrorist was neither a homosexual or was he involved in Islam. He was an extremist Christian forcing his views through a body count. He held his beliefs and made those who didn't live up to them pay with their lives. As you were not a resident of Oklahoma on that day, it could be explained why you so carelessly chose words saying that the homosexual agenda is worst than terrorism. I can most certainly tell you through my own experience that is not true. I am sure there are many people in your voting district that laid a loved one to death after the terrorist attack on Oklahoma City. I kind of doubt you'll find one of them that will agree with you.
I was five years old when my mother died. I remember what a beautiful, wise, and remarkable woman she was. I miss her. Your harsh words and misguided beliefs brought me to tears, because you told me that my mother's killer was a better person than a group of people that are seeking safety and tolerance for themselves. As someone left motherless and victimized by terrorists, I say to you very clearly you are absolutely wrong.
You represent a district in Oklahoma City and you very coldly express a lack of love, sympathy or understanding for what they've been through. Can I ask if you might have chosen wiser words were you a real Oklahoman that was here to share the suffering with Oklahoma City? Might your heart be a bit less cold had you been around to see the small bodies of children being pulled out of rubble and carried away by weeping firemen?
I've spent 12 years in Oklahoma public schools and never once have I had anyone try to force a gay agenda on me. I have seen, however, many gay students beat up and there's never a day in school that has went by when I haven't heard the word **** slung at someone. I've been called gay slurs many times and they hurt and I am not even gay so I can just imagine how a real gay person feels. You were a school teacher and you have seen those things too. How could you care so little about the suffering of some of your students?
Let me tell you the result of your words in my school. Every openly gay and suspected gay in the school were having to walk together Monday for protection. They looked scared. They've already experienced enough hate and now your words gave other students even more motivation to sneer at them and call them names. Afterall, you are a teacher and a lawmaker, many young people have taken your words to heart. That happens when you assume a role of responsibility in your community. I seriously think before this week ends that some kids here will be going home bruised and bloody because of what you said.
I wish you could've met my mom. Maybe she could've guided you in how a real Christian should be acting and speaking. I have not had a mother for nearly 13 years now and wonder if there were fewer people like you around, people with more love and tolerance in their hearts instead of strife, if my mom would be here to watch me graduate from high school this spring. Now she won't be there. So I'll be packing my things and leaving Oklahoma to go to college elsewhere and one day be a writer and I have no intentions to ever return here. I have no doubt that people like you will incite crazy people to build more bombs and kill more people again. I don't want to be here for that. I just can't go through that again.
You may just see me as a kid, but let me try to teach you something. The old saying is sticks and stones will break your bones, but words will never hurt you. Well, your words hurt me. Your words disrespected the memory of my mom. Your words can cause others to pick up sticks and stones and hurt others.
Sincerely
Tucker

Mon, March 17, 2008 - 6:13 PMWhat a powerful letter.

And when did the entire religion of Islam become a threat to our nation, to boot? Fundamentalists of any stripe are more of a threat to our nation even than terrorists, IMNSHO. People like this representative make me see red and black flashes in quick succession. -

Re: Sally Kern Says "Gays Are Worse Than Terrorists"
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 7:07 PM"And when did the entire religion of Islam become a threat to our nation, to boot? "
My thoughts exactly.
Ms. Kern's husband is Steve Kern, Pastor of the Olivet Baptist Church. Ironically, their motto is "The End of Your Search for a Friendly Church".
According to Wikipedia : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sally_Kern
"After receiving attention for the remarks, Kern said "I said nothing that was not true" and refused to apologize. She received a standing ovation from fellow Republican legislators in a private meeting a few days later. Although Kern claimed in some Christian news sources to have received death threats which caused her to retain a bodyguard, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation officer who reviewed Kern's emails said, "I wouldn't characterize them as death threats."
and...
"Kern also made headlines for authorizing a bill, which recently passed the Oklahoma House of Representatives, mandating that students who espouse Young Earth creationism still receive passing grades in Earth science classes."

Would it be horribly wrong of me to say people who think that their moral preferences should be legislated to everybody should be drug out in the street and shot? Of course it would! Bad Free! (Of course I'm not proclaiming to run the friendliest church, either. Hmmm. My definition of friendly is completely different...)
Maybe the Kerns should be given their own island somewhere. A kind of Lord of the Flies thing? -

It seems they've found one, of sorts...the Republican Party.
She did get a standing ovation from her fellow Republican lawmakers so it looks like she is far from alone in her hate-filled rhetoric. -

Re: Sally Kern Says "Gays Are Worse Than Terrorists"
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 10:02 PM<<It seems they've found one, of sorts...the Republican Party.>>
That's what I really don't get. My mother, for instance, is a hardcore Christian Conservative Republican Fundamentalist. (Capitals for emphasis, lol.) But she's also one of the kindest, most generous and caring individuals I've ever met......to those who don't fall into one of her blind spots. The usual blind spots, for Christian conservatives - gays, people of other religions, feminists, etc. If she's forced to look at one of her stereotypes head-on, her judgmental attitude will vanish. She and I had venomous religious debates when I was a teenager, and I was treated as if I'd been silently disowned - but when I was desperate and really needed her, she was there for me, 10 years later - and she apologized for lumping me in with her stereotypes, and told me I was a "good person" despite my "choices" (aargh, I love that language, separating a person from who they are! "I love the person, but I hate that they're gay" etc) She also did a lot of social service work with migrant farmers, and she's not as rabid on the immigration debate as most Republicans are.
It never ceases to amaze me how blinded people can be by the rhetoric they're exposed to. I think it really serves to dehumanized the "opposition," whatever they are...Republicans can see that person as "a gay" or "a Muslim" or "an illegal immigrant" instead of as "A Person" and that allows them to ignore that person's humanity. Once they see that "other" is just another human like they are, that whole charity thing kicks in - "Jesus said love my neighbor...AAACK! my neighbor's gay! I have to love them anyway! What do I do?" Some people react like the Kerns. Some people may actually let in a little crack of light and realize that OTHER PEOPLE exist on the planet!!! What a concept! -

And please - how many hate speechifying conservative christian fundies seem to have somehow found themselves doing lines of meth off a call boy's ass, or tapping for anonymous homosexual sex in a airport bathroom as of late?

Re: Sally Kern Says "Gays Are Worse Than Terrorists"
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 3:36 AMPersonally I find the biggest threat to my security and the security of this nation are anyone who has a belief in the Judeo Xain god. Especially when they are republicans.
As an amusing side note the Judeo-Xian faiths <Jewish, Xian and Islamic> are the only ones that will fight holy wars. For me at least that must be one weak candy ass god if he needs the likes of his followers to defend him.

They all worship the "God of Abraham" It does seem a little twisted that he finds it necessary to have them fight holy wars against each other! Hmmm...almost like a religious cock-fight.
What frightens me is that religion is what frames the definition of law in this country.

Re: Sally Kern Says "Gays Are Worse Than Terrorists"
Fri, March 28, 2008 - 6:29 PMI know this is picky, but I think it is an important nit. "Judeo-Christian" does not include Islam. It includes Judaism and Christianity. Although there are significant links between the three, Judeo-Christian is a term that only refers to two. I think you mean something like the "monotheisms" or "the desert religions". -
-
Re: Sally Kern Says "Gays Are Worse Than Terrorists"
Sat, March 29, 2008 - 3:09 PMNo Islam is included in the Judeo Xian faiths, perhaps a more accurate term would be Judeo, Christian Muslim religions or the Abrhamic Faiths.
The Term Judeo Xian is just a more commonly utilized nomenclature.
But yes I do mean Monotheistic religions sourced originally in the teachings of Abraham and later further put forward by the followers of Jesus and later Muhammad.

Re: Sally Kern Says "Gays Are Worse Than Terrorists"
Sun, March 30, 2008 - 7:24 PMYou mean like this part from your citation????
"Use of term in United States law
In the legal case of Marsh v. Chambers, 463 U.S. 783 (1983), the Supreme Court of the United States held that a state legislature could constitutionally have a paid chaplain to conduct legislative prayers "in the Judeo-Christian tradition." In Simpson v. Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors, No. 04-1045 (4th Cir. 2005), the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals held that the Supreme Court's holding in the Marsh case permitting legislative bodies to conduct prayer in the "Chesterfield County could constitutionally exclude Cynthia Simpson, a Wiccan priestess, from leading its legislative prayers, because her faith was not "in the Judeo-Christian tradition." Chesterfield County's Board included Jewish, Christian, and Muslim clergy in its invited list."
I did post a point of clarification... The reality is common usage includes the islamic religions. To my initial argument, regardless of the semantics, the Islamic Faiths are amongst the "Abrahamic Religions"
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abra..._Religions
And those three groups are the only ones that conduct holy wars.
No matter what ya call em all three are hateful and despicable when dealing with people who do not cotton to their narrow philosophical thought model.

Re: Sally Kern Says "Gays Are Worse Than Terrorists"
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 10:33 AMYour quotations both relate to the proper use and meaning of the term 'Judeo-Christian", and your use of the term "Abrahamic faiths" is also correct. However, the term "Judeo Christian" is never accurately used to include the Muslim faith! Even in your quotation, the fact that Muslim clergy were on the board does not change the fact that the Wiccan prayers were deemed unacceptable because they did not fall into the Judeo-Christian (ie Jewish and Christian-based) tradition of the US.
The "common usage" you refer to must be your own.
I will not continue to insist on this because I can already see we are descending into "yes/no/yes/no/yes/no" land. -

It is a bit frivolous to enter in on this - but I agree.. I believe the two terms "Judeo Christian" and "Abrahamic faiths" exist because they are different - the latter including the Islamic Tradition because all use Abraham as a focal cultural/religious point and the first excluding Islam. Done a considerable amount of reading on this - and apply "Judeo Christian" in ways which include Islam is a misuse of the term...
What the hell.. I might as well give a source for my opinion;
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abrahamic_religion
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judeo-Christian
I am sure you might find sites which misuse the terms.. but I would be surprised if the writers of those sites are very scholarly......

Other than the Maccabean Revolt against Rome in 167 BCE, cannot recall a Holy War by the Jews. Also cannot recall Jews condemning another religion or it's members, as doing such is specifically forbidden. The Jewish religion is unusual in that is does not hold itself as possessing ultimate truth applicable to all. Same as to salvation, which is available to "The Righteous", regardless of their belief.
We have most to fear from the "True Believers" of whatever stripe. There is no difference whatsoever between the Christian who shrieks that Islam must be wiped out, the pilots of 9/11,, and the KKK burning a cross. All are wholly convinced they are in possession of ultimate truth, and both are ready to sacrifice others lives for their belief.
Eric Hoffer, a New York longshoreman, defined the True Believer in 1951. For more, see www.erichoffer.net/ -

Re: Sally Kern Says "Gays Are Worse Than Terrorists"
Sun, March 30, 2008 - 10:54 PMActually numerous holy wars by the Jews are documented in the old testament starting with Cain and Able. The justification to subjugate others within a region was they were "God's Chosen People".
Then again the gawd of that book is some blood thirsty temper tantrum throwing brat.
In Modern terms I cannot think of situations in which wars have been conducted in the name of their faith or belief but this does not eliminate the historical significance of actions taken and the reasons for said actions.
You are definitely right that true believers of any stripe are a threat to anyone who does not share their belief system.

nope, ill stick with scorn - and maybe a little pity for myself - that i have to share a planet with intolerant a**holes. i wish i could make them go away, just like theyd like to do to those they dont "tolerate". treat as you have-been treated is my opinion... if i were to _initiate_ contact, then i use the "treat as i would like-to-be treated" maxim... -

Re: Sally Kern Says "Gays Are Worse Than Terrorists"
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 5:38 AMThe best way to handle such people is engagement - dogged engagement in dialogue which exposes their bigotry. It wont' change their mionds, but neutralizes their influence on others.
If you get the chance, ask questions, "Ms Kerns, I do not understand.; Will you tell us how homosexuality can destroy our nation. Give some examples." Add statements like "Homosexuals are statistically less likely to commit violent crimes; wouldn't we be safer if there were more?" Besides, homosexuals don't have children, they reduce the population explosion!
If you are really concerned, do letters to the editor, speak out in public forums, Don't just call them what they are - bigots -force them to justify their bigotry with Fact, and Truth. They can't, and their hollow reasoniong is exposed.
Worked in a hardware store, customer comes in, starts railing on Gays, Abortion, Liberals, etc. Finally had enough, engaged him point by point. In desperation, he say "Don't you know who I am, I have a successful Radio talk show!" "Now, now, that only means you have convinced a sponsor to pay for your air time - that has no bearing on the validity of you statements."
Other store customers have gathered, looking to him for solid answers. One even joins in .Store owners are giving me a look; fearful they are loosing a customer. "If you're so upset, and decide not to shop here, no problem. I'll personally pay the store the average you've spent here. That's a hollow threat"
The Talk Show beats a retreat out the door He had never met a literate, vociferious "Liberal" before.

Alert: They're Coming to Your Town!!!
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 1:33 PMOkay, I have to share this. A friend of mine sent me a newsletter that the American Family Association is sending out to their membership and the message at one of their links is below. It makes me laugh at it's absurdity until I realize that people really believe this stuff! And it's even cheaper to by crap in a five-pack! (Ummm...WHOSE indoctrinating whom?)
"THEY'RE COMING TO YOUR TOWN
Residents of the small Arkansas town of Eureka Springs noticed the homosexual community was growing. But they felt no threat. They went about their business as usual. Then, one day, they woke up to discover that their beloved Eureka Springs, a community which was known far and wide as a center for Christian entertainment--had changed. The City Council had been taken over by a small group of homosexual activists.
The Eureka Springs they knew is gone. It is now a national hub for homosexuals. Eureka Springs is becoming the San Francisco of Arkansas. The story of how this happened is told in the new AFA DVD “They’re Coming To Your Town.”
One of the first actions of the homosexual controlled City Council was to offer a “registry” where homosexuals could register their unofficial “marriage.” City Council member Joyce Zeller said the city will now be promoted, not as a Christian resort, but a city “selling peace, relaxation, history and sex.”
AFA’s “They’re Coming ToYour Town” documents the story of how and why this happened. And how homosexual activists plan to do the same in other towns.
Order a copy of “They’re Coming To Your Town.” Watch it. Then take the 28-minute DVD and share it with your Sunday School class and local church. This is a story the liberal media will never tell, but one you need to know.
Special Offer! Save over 33%! Order a 5 pack and put this vital information in the hands of your local officials, pastors and other community leaders."
Here's the trailer for the DVD...

Actually, this situation sounds really unpleasant. Not because of the takeover by gays, but because of the takeover itself, by a bunch of self serving peple with their own agenda. Who has the right to go into a small, quiet town, and take it over in order to promote it and "sell" it for anything? This is a Walmart manoever, a Starbucks strategy--move in and take over and fuck anyone who was quietly living and making a living. We're here now and we're gonna make a profit and if you don't like it, tough.
Ugh. -

Re: Alert: They're Coming to Your Town!!!
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 9:07 PM"Not because of the takeover by gays, but because of the takeover itself, by a bunch of self serving peple with their own agenda."
The "take-over" was simply the legal due-process of voting into city council, folks who ran for the posts, were qualified to run for these posts and just happened to have an open minded view of gay issues. The funny thing is to imagine there is a "gay agenda" that all the fundamentalists speak of. What agenda? To be treated like everybody else in this country? No special rights - simply equal rights. -
-
Re: Alert: They're Coming to Your Town!!!
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 9:26 PMAh, the "gay agenda". Is that the one supported by the "international Jewish conspiracy" and reported on by the "liberal media"?

Re: Alert: They're Coming to Your Town!!!
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 3:47 AMkalsang - But don't the people who want "the gays" out also have their own self serving agenda they're seeking to impose upon unwilling others? After all, the church was the first franchising multinational out there and they've been busy fucking anyone who wants to live quietly and a make a living for centuries. I believe they invented the "fire sale" too.
