I now have 5 invitations to join this 'professional' network. It's supposed to be like facebook minus all the hoopla. I looked into it and can't make any more sense of it than I can with Facebook.

Anyway, I was having dinner with my stepfather tonight, a well respected wildlife film documentary maker as well as published author on screenwriting and head of a graduate school wildlife film documentary program called "Terra", and he said that he also received several invites so he decided to finally go ahead and join an create a profile. Now, teh only reason I mentioned all of his amazing and awe inspiring credentials is because he didn't mention even a single ONE in his LinkedIn profile. I suppose this makes him an "alt".

He used his real name but said that he was the "His Holiness, the XI Bishop of Bessarabia at Principality of Moldova" and that his life's goal is to "make the holy pilgrimage by the feet between Szerbo and Laszka, the path road of martyred St. Fyodor, 1624-1671 to the blessed spring to which miracles to this day today happen still. By the graceful of Iesus Christos, this shall happen the day before I die."

"To connect with His Holiness light candle please, blessed peace be unto all who speak his name."

Did I ever mention how much I love this man? If not, my bad. He is like a brilliant little kid in an old man's body.

But I digress. Anyone here on this networking site?

i have a profile on there, but i never check it. I signed up, thinking it would be good for business contacts, but then i moved to England. Every once in a while, one of my old classmates links to me, but I certainly haven't...er...tapped its potential, such as it is.

    LOL

More power to your Stepfather !

I am there - under my real name and a little professional detail (only professional - left Directorships off it methnks). I always feel uncomfortable with information out there about me on the internet with my name against it - should it ever bite me in the bum at some point. Hence - "Bloke" - but my friends may well recognise me cold from my profile here... but it is not my friends I would worry about.

Many professional friends swear by it for making contacts for business. I joined because a contact kept going on about it - but I basically ignore it.

As to how to 'use' it effectively - I have no idea.

linked in is the best thing since sliced bread !!! it is awesome and wonderful and i dont know how i could live without it... [/end sarcasm]

it, like anything, can be a tool. (or a food product - different from sliced bread, of course)

your step father has indeed attempted to make a mockery of it - whereas many others use it for its intended purpose. me? i have a profile (real) and use it (rarely), but find that other more traditional approaches to networking for jobs is more effective. [insert biting comment about personal-ads here... ;-) ]
