The tribe seems a bit dead...
Susan Boyle seems to have sparked all sorts of discussions on "beauty"
Me, what appeals is the way she stuck it up the audience and her singing gives me shivers :)
www.youtube.com/watch
Thoughts ?
Do her looks cloud her talent, do they matter, do they colour how people view her and her ability ?
How about her age ?
I have not seem much of her, but she does not seem to be a shrinking violet and I love the quiet (well founded!) confidence she showed in the face of the audience, but especially the judges ,who seemed to immediately have some preconceptions, both before, and after she sung.
Does the cover of the book *really* count ?
If these are stupid questions - why are many of our societies asking them ?
Has she got much coverage in the States ?

Re: She is all over the news...
Sun, April 19, 2009 - 11:50 PMYeah, lots of coverage in the States.
I watched it a few times, myself.
It did piss me off that people seemed to be all" Oh my god,a homely person doing something extraordinary! WHA?" on that show.
But it is true, society does value the pretty people over the less pretty often times.
Which is funny, as being "pretty" is often a roll of the genetic dice. Much like having a amazing voice, or ability to play music very well, paint, ectera. Susan Boyle won on the voice part. Which in the end, is better than the being pretty part. Pretty is fleeting.
If she has that amazing a voice at 47, she is going to mostly likely have an amazing voice into old age. I am curious if she understand music theory, has ever had any lessons, or was it just plain luck she happen to have perfect pitch and range.
. And let me say, on the matter of physical attributes, I don't think she is ugly, she has an interesting face. A few simple grooming things would bring those interesting qualities to the forefront quite easily.. I think she has a lovely smile and her personality sparkles through quite well.
Her backstory makes me think me she was already worthy of some admiration to begin with, even without the voice thing.
But whatever. At the end of the day, she was a good reminder to a lot of people to not judge so quickly.
I happen to always cheer for the underdog. I really would not be surprised if she goes in the musical theater.

You know, there was a time back before the mid-80s and the advent of music videos when it didn't matter if you were ugly if you could sing (being pretty has always helped in showbiz, nonetheless). I contend that one reason pop music has gotten crapper is because now only pretty-ish people are allowed to be pop stars. Mediocre singers always hid behind technology but it's now very easy to clean up vocals so that they sound on-key even if they weren't sung on key, to stretch the length of a note and so on.
I do find it striking how many people seem to be so excited by her though, as if she's a stand-in for everyone's aspirations to be famous and discovered later in life (aka "after their prime"). Having just watched Gray Gardens (quite fantastic!), I'm perhaps a bit extra cynical about the drive for celebrity at the moment.
I, being a bit of an unrepentant music snob/lover, am appalled to think of what kind of Il Divo type levels of classical-lite fame she'll achieve with the "guidance" of Simon Powell (though I'd love to hear her sing in a choir). -

Yep, I think her aspirant symbolism to us here ordinary folk is why she has captured the imagination of so many.

Tue, April 21, 2009 - 5:05 AMBloke - The thing is, she's just a plain woman with a decent (but not dazzling) voice. She isn't really even ugly, just very plain. If she wasn't so plain and have the backstory she does, I suspect people wouldn't find her voice quite as remarkable. -

Re: She is all over the news...
Tue, April 21, 2009 - 10:02 AMthat's just it, her voice isn't that remarkable
(and yes, i was touched by the video)
now, if a stunningly attractive woman had come out and sung in a less than stellar voice
she probably would have been lambasted.

Re: She is all over the news...
Tue, April 21, 2009 - 10:22 AMFifi, I found her beyond plain and into ugly category. Not hideous, mind you, but certainly ugly. She had no chin, thick eyebrows, pasty skin, no body tone, and looked significantly older than 47 (Simon Cowell is 49). I also found her voice dazzling, or rather, with computer sound and my ear would not have been able to distinguish between her voice and one that was dazzling. -
-
Re: She is all over the news...
Tue, April 21, 2009 - 11:15 AMI'm with Wild, I just don't find her voice particularly amazing. Certainly not on the level of a Celine Dion or an early Whitney Houston (I don't like *what* either of them sing but they do both have exceptional voices in terms of range, control and ability to hold a note...not that much of this can't be fixed in the studio these days). Granted, the kind of music Susan Boyle sings does nothing good for me but I can listen past that and I just don't find her voice that stunning. It's a good, decent voice that you ca tell was honed singing in an English choir but clearly a large part of her appeal isn't her voice but the contrast between her voice and socially-retarded/naive frumpiness (as if somehow talent is only reserved for the beautiful...when the truth is really that many will choose beauty/surface over meaning/talent or skill). Clearly part of it is that everyone in the audience and the judges openly, and somewhat derisively since they're obviously used to making fun of the dreams of frumpy middle aged women with aspirations of "grandeur", expected her to bomb simply because of how she looks. It's a bit like how Brittany Spears is really big mainly because she's kinda average/pretty looking white trash and not because of talent.
Ever - I guess "ugly" means more frightening or disgusting looking to me than just plain to me (plain being below average looks but not hideous to gaze upon). I suspect the plain to ugly line is different for all of us (and more personal than the beautiful category). -

Tue, April 21, 2009 - 2:50 PMFifi... very seldom would I say you are fully and completely full of shit... But in this case based on the opinion of my classically trained opera singing room mate. Her voice kicks the living fuck out of both celine and whitney. Seriously
My room mate was absolutely amazed that her voice had such clarity and depth without training.
Just out of curiosity what is your vocal background fifi? Seriously have you trained? performed? Is your background in music theory> I notice you compared her to pop stars, how does she fare against say Britney?
What I can saw for myself is her voice moved me, I lack creds to bring an opinion to the table as to theory depth range control...But really.... where is your A game Celine, Whitney??? neither of those twats ever did a fucking thing for me. <oh and BTW... the shit you see is without post production.

One thought I had was what if that is the only song she can sing well ? (sounds dumb, but some singers are very unversatile) And the way the judges applauded her on the basis of a sole performance, strong reacting against their first false impression to write her off. One song does not make a performer who will win the competition. But I did think her voice was very good when I heard a decent version of it (on youtube). I have listened to it without looking to sort of test myself out- removed from the audience and judges reaction to it (lets not forget there is an interest in manipulating the audience here AND we should be cautious not to be manipulated by Boyle herself). And I still like it and it moves me. Her song choice way also excellent for an aspiring unheard of performer in a talent show, but I must admit, I am at a certain time and place in my life where perhaps the song (which I sort of know and already like) carried more meaning - a song about dreams.
Thats what the best artist do. They touch your soul. And perhaps Ms Boyle was using a variety of "assets" to do that, but the primary one in my opinion, was her voice. -

Re: She is all over the news...
Tue, April 21, 2009 - 8:19 PMShe has another recorded track. I think she's just fantastic and that her voice does stand on it's own. I have a history of classical training and musical theater and she is no flash in the pan. That song from Les Mis is very challenging and she nailed it.

her voice is amazing, and her point came across well when she said
that she'd never been given the chance before - as the judges looked
at her, you could imagine exactly why.
i think it's too bad that she's become such an icon *because* she has
such a beautiful voice in contrast to what is considered a less than
beautiful appearance - it's sad that her voice alone isn't enough, it has
to be made more significant by her looks. but that's society. -

Mon, April 20, 2009 - 10:12 AMYeah, it bugged me that Julie Chen's interview of Ms. Boyle on The Early Show focused almost entirely on whether or not she would be willing to, or is even looking forward to a full makeover. Personally, I LOVE the fact that Ms. Boyle is a *real person*, and she exudes self confidence and charm despite all the ridiculous focus on her physical appearance.

Re: She is all over the news...
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 11:15 AM-K - I think a lot of people love that she's a "real person". Let's just hope there are good people around her to take care of her so she doesn't get exploited.
Of course, pardon my cynicism, but those who essentially make their living being pretty (such as many morning talk show hosts) need to somehow make her "worthy" of celebrity and only the "attractive" should be allowed to think they're worthy of success (no matter how much talent they have) or love. (It's what the advertising/marketing game is all about really...telling us all that we're not "enough" and they have the product to "fix" our "not enough"). They do this to very pretty girls too though - and men for that matter - it's a means of psychological control and way to have power over what many A&R guys see as their "product". They've been pretty desperate with the way music has been wriggling out of their control (when they used to have a monopoly)....frumpy middle aged ladies and fat girls becoming popular distorts their vision of themselves as masters of the universe and manipulators of public taste).

My feelings exactly. People seem to assume that ugly == stupid; ugly == of less worth. That just saddens and pisses me off at the same time. While I don't agree with you on Celine Dion (sure her range is great, so is Steve Vai, but they both lack emotional depth in my limited experience with their work).

Re: She is all over the news...
Tue, April 21, 2009 - 5:15 AMWow, she is very humble and frumpy. I was surprised by the voice, even though I knew it would be good or you wouldn't have posted it. I don't like people using the word "real" to describe overweight or unattractive people. I'm sensitive to that, being fitness-focused I've been pointed out as not being a "real" when I am just as real as anybody. -

Ever, I never said anything about her being real or not real based on her weight or physical beauty. Clearly, that's a sensitivity of yours, not mine.
Anyway, I would describe several folks more physically attractive than Ms.Boyle as being just as "real". For me it's not just one select quality like say, being fit (or overweight)...it's a whole slew of qualities and characteristics that, for me, combine into something tangibly 'real'. For example, actress Drew Barrymore strikes me as being both very attractive and also very 'real', but its her overall sense of humor, talent and down-to-earthness that strikes me this way. Singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams also strikes me as being very 'real', (and talented, tortured and funny as hell) but I don't consider her to be particularly attractive.
In the end, I suppose if Susan Boyle wants to glamorize herself then she should take this opportunity to do so...my main issue was more with the heavy emphasis the media has put into her looks. It didn't seem like she was given much of a choice in the matter. In fact, I heard on NPR (this morning or yesterday, not sure) that Simon Cowell is putting her up to some sort of "Simon Says" type challenge regarding a makeover. But, whatever she does or doesn't do, she certainly doesn't strike me as the sort of person to suddenly jump on the anorexic, cosmetically enhanced, never-wear-the-same-outfit twice, revolving door rehab resident that stardom seems to breed.

Re: She is all over the news...
Tue, April 21, 2009 - 3:02 PMI have seen and heard the oh my god she is such a dog thing but listen to that voice. Her voice is stunning with proper training it can become extraordinary. I could give a rats ass about her appearance. There was a time when you didn't have to be pretty to make it in music. <thinking Janis, Joe Cocker and that ilk yes I know they are not operatic>
If that voice had come out of some pretty cunt.... My response would be "That little plastic actually has some talent"
That being said I am not the norm <thankfully I am sure to many> In reality and studies have verified that pretty people are given far more opportunities than ugly ones. Fifi cites Whitney and the Dion chick. To my ear thay have good voices... Not great.... But in their day they were very shaggable. So what the hell give the dumb bitch a shot. Even if they can't sing we can sell albums to give teenage boys and girls wanking material. When you deal with a person like Susan Boyle... That is purely based on her vocal aesthetic.

I find it particularly funny since Celine actually started out as more of a child star (hence all the talk about her manager/husband, there's an unfortunate and disturbing child abusing side to the Quebec entertainment industry - which does love it's trashy child stars - that Celine and Rene emerged from).
nymag.com/arts/books/reviews/42082/
"Céline emerged as a white-trash child star frequently mocked in the press for her “bushy hair and snaggle teeth.” She was also possessed, of course, with that Voice, an inhumanly powerful blast that annihilated the competition at cheesy global talent contests (the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo, the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin) and made her manager cry, mortgage his house, and eventually marry her." -

Re: She is all over the news...
Wed, April 22, 2009 - 1:15 PMI came away with it thinking I may still have some things left in my life to do. For the last few years I've felt like I've already done everything I had a desire for and what's left is just making the time not so boring. So her age affected me the most. I think it's also good to feel like I don't need to try to look better than I do, or to wish I look better than I do.
My preconceived notions didn't have to do with her being ugly so much, because I don't think she is. But I did think if she didn't have the insight to notice what things could make her look better she probably wouldn't notice what would make music sound better. So that's probably me, or current style, not seeing the beauty in her style. I don't even listen to that type of music normally, but it sounded beautiful. At first I thot I'd like to see her eyebrows plucked, but it'd also be a great statement for her to look however she wants to.
I see people like Mariah Cary who seems to try so hard to be sexy, when I don't think she even needs to try. I think she couldn't not be sexy if she tried, but it's painful to watch her go overboard. Susan seems like a relief from that.

Tue, April 28, 2009 - 6:53 PMFifi... seriously she is in the upper 80%. I watched a few vids of her. Answer to your query would be yes... Her eyes are fab, she has a wonderfun jaw line and neck... I have always had a soft spot for a cleanly defined clavicle. So yeah Celine is VERY shaggable.
Susan Boyle.... nope I wouldn't fuck her with a stolen dick <George Carlin>

Re: She is all over the news...
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 5:09 PMJSin -Oh, I don't think Celine is a dog, just kind of average looking and not what I'd classify as "hot". (And she's much more attractive now that she's older actually, by my tastes anyway...there are a lot of pedophiles involved Quebec showbiz, there have been a couple of tell all memoirs recently). Clearly our tastes in women differ so we won't be dueling to the death over any ladies ;-) I also think Celine has a fantastic voice, even if she sings in a style that I abhor. Not to be mean to Celine but she's a rather average looking Quebecoise (the skinniness is genetic not anorexia, I've got friends who are equally skinny no matter what they eat) even if she's a spectacular performer (which she is). There are some very, very hot Quebecoise- girls from Lac St-Jean are infamous for their beauty - so by local standards she's on the average side (even if she's essentially the Queen of Quebec...the show biz scene here is pretty special).
I do hear you about the sexy clavicle thing though.... -

Sat, May 2, 2009 - 1:21 AMOh, and YES YES YES Bloke, at least from a sociological level, looks matter BIGTIME. There have been studies that show strong evidence for this (people wearing fat-suits and then coming back into to apply for the same job with a mostly identical resume, etc.)
I for one am sick of societal beauty norms. I say fuck such status quo norms. They don't accurately reflect the true nature of what we as individuals or groups really think is beautiful. For example I think that the actor who plays Rita Sue, the 30's era "cooch show" dancer on the mind-blowing HBO series Carnivàle is just stunningly beautiful and sexy. A lot of people just think she's "fat".
As for Susan Boyle, she is rather homely, but to call her ugly seems cruel, if not true for many.
