Did we lose some threads? It almost looks like they restored posts from a server back up: There are threads missing, some threads have less posts than they used to, etc.
Mein got. If they can do all this, where will they stop?!?!?!

Re: What The Fart?
Tue, December 9, 2008 - 3:43 PMThe humanitarian explanation might be that the higher powers of tribe.net are really just trying to help us hobble along in breaking our dependency issues on tribe itself. They remove a few threads here and there, shut down entirely for brief periods of time and blame it all on us with "tragic error" html code. Call it pseudo-techno-tough-love.
But tribe.net is not exactly a non-profit org out to help our poor souls achieve some semblance of non-dependence. So, the only other explanation I can come up with is that tribe.net is floundering. Has been for some time. And like any enabler, we just try to forget about the bad times, the times it wasn't there for us when we needed it most and forge ahead with the crazy idea that because it wasn't there for us yesterday, or last year, it will always be there.
I think tribe.net is counting on our selective memory to keep them in the black. And the more they threaten to remove or simply fuck up our communication with other tribe.net users, the more $$ we'll throw at them in the hopes that they'll just become a nice, stable addiction. So far it seems to be working for tribe, but not for its users. Ah, the evil nature of addiction.
But it could be SO easy. Other interpersonal sites seem to empower their users outright and even do them the favor of being consistently available...allowing, of course, for more advertisers $$.
Tribe.net is not unlike that absent parent that shows up just long enough for you to believe they'll be there forevor...just before it takes off again.

Re: What The Fart?
Tue, December 9, 2008 - 3:48 PM-K - That's hilarious! Though I, for one (and maybe two or a 4/4 beat), blame it on the fish farting robots running amok. AMOK I SAY!!!! AMOK!!! One hopes that tribe.net would say "so long, and thanks for all the fish farts!" but sadly I suspect we will just wake up one day and find ourselves floundering in cyberspace like kippers flapping about in a drying pond..... -

Re: What The Fart?
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 5:23 AM-K - I view tribe.net more like a sort of grotty bar that periodically gets raided or loses its license (rather than the drug itself). You can buy anything here from drugs to water to a quickie in a back alley, your experience is your choice. That said, it's hard not to notice the flashers lurching towards you with their dick out, the local crazy drunk guy proclaiming himself enlightened and evangelists trying to save you from the soul torching evil that they see tribe.net and Western civilization as. They may just prefer to burn tribe down rather than let the infidels have it. On the other hand there are spectacular performances, fire breathing and setting fire to flames, clowns galore (rodeo and otherwise), and lots of contortionists, high wire acts and lion tamers. All in all, it's a great show thanks to the performers...though clearly the fact that the tent keeps caving in on the performers has a detrimental effect on everyone's fun. -

Wed, December 10, 2008 - 9:15 AM"That said, it's hard not to notice the flashers lurching towards you with their dick out..."
This made me giggle. Which is fitting because I think that should be the universal response to flashers. Just point, laugh, then ask them what box of Cracker Jacks they got the novelty whang from. -

That's exactly what my mom taught me to do. Though, I've come to realize that flashers often like ANY attention (I mean, you've got to have SOME masochistic and passive aggressive tendencies to be a flasher) so I generally just ignore them or shrug and go "eh" now. Sure laughing isn't the disgust they hope to inspire but it's still noticing and interacting with them. If they're doing it on the bus I start pointing and talking loudly about it in both official languages (though this hasn't happened to me for years) - making them run the gauntlet and not being too ashamed to point them out seems to work quite well.

Re: What The Fart?
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 9:27 AMFor those, who for whatever reasons feel like they need to demonstrate some sort of power or control in this tribe, the only power they really have is to be able to delete their own threads. Other than that they have to deal with people. The weak delete when things don't go like they want them to. -

Re: What The Fart?
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 10:06 AMIt's true, thread deletion is for the weak and those trying to hide the evidence that things have gone differently than they would have liked, it always seems kind of funny to me when people do it in an extreme honesty tribe. -

Re: What The Fart?
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 10:23 AMI'm not gonna lie, I have posted a topic drunk when I first joined tribe and regretted it! That may be the only justifiable thread deletion. I warned everyone though.
No drunk tribing.... more drunk nookie. -

Re: What The Fart?
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 10:42 AMquel - Oh, I'm not saying I don't have regrets or cringe-worthy posts - and I did do some deleting when I first joined since it seemed to be how things went on tribe when a thread got overrun. It's an option that is presented and, sometimes, that "delete thread" button is tempting... I prefer the "no deleting" rule though and particularly appreciate this tribe because of it and the kind of people it attracts who stick around (sock puppets aside).

Re: What The Fart?
Thu, December 11, 2008 - 1:27 PMGingerbread Martini
This recipe calls for homemade ginger syrup but you can buy a commercially prepared version at specialty food stores
Ingredients:
Ginger Syrup:
3/4 cup water
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 (2-inch) piece fresh ginger, coarsely chopped
2 sticks of cinnamon
3 whole cloves
Directions:
Simmer water, sugar, ginger, cloves and cinnamon stirring occasionally, until reduced to about 3/4 cup, about 15 minutes.
Pour hot syrup through a fine sieve and chill.
Let stand 20 minutes until using, so all sediment has settled to the bottom.
Servings: Approximately 3/4 cup.
Martini:
Ingredients:
ice
2 ounces vodka
1/2 to 1 ounce gingerbread syrup
Directions:
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
Add the vodka and gingerbread syrup.
Cover and shake vigorously until combined and chilled, about 30 seconds.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. -

I don't recognize lotusflower as a regular poster here. If she is reading it, deleting threads that contain other people's posts is grounds for getting 86'd from this tribe. -

Re: What The Fart?
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 1:16 PM"What did it say, and was there a bunch of replies?"
She felt that people were too excited that OJ is finally going to jail. Then she got unneccesarily defensive when people didn't start kissing her ass and agreeing.
There were probably 60+ replies. -

Re: What The Fart?
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 2:50 PMNo, it really didn't. It displayed the opinions of a sample of about 5 people. None of whom can really be characterized as typical yanks. Especially since at least one of them was Canadian. -

Re: What The Fart?
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 3:10 PMIt was more of an overview on the perceptions of many posters here. Not the US as a whole in anyway.
That being said I do think some significant issues were discussed.
JSin -
-
Re: What The Fart?
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 3:34 PMI don't think the opinions in that thread were emblematic of US perceptions of race and class as a whole. So much depends on a host of factors.
Geographic location, history of that location, family, industry, income, education, social standing etc. etc. -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: What The Fart?
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 3:40 PMAge plays into it too. It's hardly like racism or a history of slavery are unique to America either. The racism of the British is really quite legendary, for instance (oi oi oi!) and it's not like classism doesn't exist in the country where you can tell someone's class by their accent. Ditto the French for slavery and racism. If you move along to Asia, you'll find that there's a lot of inter-Asian racism as well. It's a people thing. If there isn't someone from a different race, then a different tribe will do. Granted, racism has played out somewhat differently in the US than Europe but neither way it's played out is particularly better than the other.

Re: What The Fart?
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 4:19 PM<<It was more of an overview on the perceptions of many posters here.>>
I don't even think it was that. There were only a few people who participated in that thread and some people (like myself) never gave an opinion on what we thought of the whole OJ thing. -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: What The Fart?
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 4:33 PMActually, Yewnie was a good voice of reason in that thread. I was mostly just having fun, then got frustrated as the OP didn't want to see (IMO) other's point of view. I felt a bit like since I was a white chick, my opinion that OJ got what was coming to him due to his own arrogance and stupidity was invalid from the get go. But then I was not really invested in the subject like the OP seemingly was, so I wasn't too worried about that.
But whatever, it was a thread, it had some opinions, some people didn't like said opinions and they decided to delete and find greener pastures.
Same same.

Re: What The Fart?
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 3:09 PMYep basically it covered the role of racism in perception of others. It had issues concerning the sentencing and what was involved ect. The thread had become quite extensive.

Re: What The Fart?
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 7:24 PMRegardless. There was discussion. It was deleted. It cannot be referenced as a result same as others that have been deleted. I could show examples of intelligent conversation in the thread but wait... It's fucking gone.
To me that is the salient point. Regardless of final outcome or progression deletion of threads deprives the followup posters the ability to reference their own work and the statements of others and as such can be characterized as whatever a given poster perceives it as.
Personally I think some important issues were discussed. You saw bickering. An outsider at this point cannot form their own opinion as to the content.
JSin -

Re: What The Fart?
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 7:34 PMYou're right, I shouldn't just dismiss the whole thread as just bickering because there was some discussion and there was real exchange of information as well. Unfortunately bickering and tit for tat seemed to dominate the thread from my POV. But yeah, the thread is gone and so at this point it is like we are literally discussing nothing. ;)

Re: What The Fart?
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 7:43 PMExactly, JSin. I think I only contributed two posts, maybe three in total before it was deleted. But I did spend some time and energy on them- one in particular- and am now bummed that I can't review or reference any of them at all. Also, I was one of those that didn't weigh in on the O.J. trial and resulting sentence because I was far more interested in the *big picture* that other poster's were discussing regarding classism/racism.
Oh well.

Re: What The Fart?
Sat, December 13, 2008 - 12:25 PMI will attempt to send the obligatory warning note to the OP.
To reiterate....
Start all the threads you like, delete them if you must if no one has replied. Delete a thread with even one reply and that is grounds for removal from this tribe. -

Re: What The Fart?
Sat, December 13, 2008 - 9:03 PMlike some spring annuals - the thread and its beauty are gone... ah well - i noticed that j-t never deleted his thread from the while-ago when he was being sent-to-hell...
amazing what a few days away from tribe does for perspective... lotusflower is a really-old name that i recognize. i cant say that she hasnt come/gone many times thru the years... i hope that she received and understood the warning-shot fired from rich as richmod.
i can make some reasonable assumptions about what/how the thread went by the comments here... if there are still some thoughts that someone wanted to express - why not restart the discussion? if folks are interested still - they can respond - with either historical-knowledge or historical-ignorance (like me) of the prior thread... just a thought.
