Has left the tribe. I did not remove her although I certainly would have enjoyed it.

"I certainly would have enjoyed it"?

It saddens me to hear that from the moderator (or benevolent dictator as your members seem to see you as).. I personally know sunshine to be a real sweet person..so attacking her is definately a mirror on how unsafe the enviroment is in your moderating domain..

I would like to offer you the enjoyment of removing me..a new member who comes in with hopes and enthusiasm for sincere community of honesty..

Sunshine was nothing but nasty to me. She got what she deserved from me.

BTW I didn't remove her from this tribe, and I have no interest in removing you.

I'd like you to know, that I think everyone is more or less expressing themselves without much censorship...which I find comforting.

I find you rather balanced and more or less composed around the "drama"... these members don't hold back much...which I think is what is desired in EH.

I find alot of "attacks" are not really attacks..but simply expressions for having fun.
I find that alot of folks like to have fun along the lines of "poking fun" of something or someone..

there is a balance however, as you can imagine, if you are the subject of the entertainment.. it can establish an enviroment where someone in incline to interpret such "fun" as attack on their integrity, and they feel indignant, disrespect, unvalued, alianted..etc..
it's simply a normal human response.

I'm thinking that one has to have a thick skin to have discourse in EH, right? but the mission statement states that one should not need to have strong defenses.. one should feel safe to be vulnerable..

surely you must think there is something of a disharmony here, yes?

I wonder if you would be willing to just think about the sincerity of the mission statement and what extreme honesty really is and what it may take to encourage it...and if you see some room for improvement somewhere..

sometimes the sun shines. sometimes the sun sets

just to put in my 2 cents: Rich has been--and in my opinion still is--a very trustworthy moderator the entire time I have been part of this tribe

as a part of some recent drama, i dont know if yall were watching me vent - but one thing that helped me a bit was to realize that rich-the-person (who i would just call rich) and rich-the-moderator (who i started calling richmod) _could be_ considered two distinct entities. my analogy was that rich is like a policeman who can be on or off-duty around here. obviously the human who IS a policeman cant really separate themselves, but a person is not the sum-total of their job.

rich, if youre reading this, please try not to take offense - this analogy was just _my_ way of dealing with some of the recent drama.

anyways, the way that i read richs post below was that richmod was denying involvement with sunshines departure, but that rich was glad that she was gone. simple.

carrying anything (including analogies like i just made) to an extreme is rarely productive, but making sense of new information by using an analogy to an old/known concept can be a useful learning tool - at least it can be for me.

are we onto this dead horse again?

Thick skin can be a good attribute in many arenas, but coherence is priceless everywhere.

    Where did this drama occur?
I was not aware that there was any drama.
I would like to at least sample the drama, even if it's in a post-drama phase.

As for the discrepancy - percieved or otherwise - between the mission statement and our behavior, well, there are a lot of reasons for it.

-Not everybody that joins the tribe has the same basic viewpoint as stated in the mission statement. That doesn't mean they shouldn't join, and it doesn't mean that they won't add value to the tribe.

-People's definition of compassion, people's belief in how much compassion should be doled out, how much compassion people are capable of, what warrants compassion, all of these things vary from person to person, even if they were all to agree that the mission statement fits their world view.

Your mileage may vary but quite frankly, the people that stick around EH don't tend to complain about the general atmosphere. The people who come in and, however nicely worded, tell us things aren't working properly rarely stay around. Which is great! Because we have had more than a couple show up and try to point out so-called inconsistencies in our behavior or call us hypocrites, clique-ish, and on and on. Eventually they got tired of harping and moved on to something THEY find rewarding rather than trying to alter what WE find rewarding.

Lastly, I really do think Rich is a quality moderater. Herald's differentiation between Rich the EH member and Rich the EH moderator is a good one: He's as much a participant in the tribe as he is a moderator and as such has, and should, expressed his opinion on any topic that surfaces. Certainly since I joined EH Rich has never booted somebody that didn't deserve it. In fact, in most cases he waited way longer than I would have to drop the hammer.

This is so right on, Josh. And while I wasn't privy to any Sunshine-Rich drama, if she felt the need to remove herself then I respect that decision.
