So what did you talk about?

Did you have/go to a Thanksgiving dinner? What did you talk about? Did the conversation drift and jump or did you have a main topic of conversation?

I was thinking about that evening and surprisingly enough we didn't discuss Obama a single time. Usually politics is the main topic of conversation with my family. We did still talk about politics which is why I find it funny that our President elect didn't come up at all.
Our conversation drifted quite a bit this time. We talked about the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art and how it was out of money and who was offering to give it money and who isn't. We discussed Somalian pirates and then after that passionate expression throughout history and how the lack of eminent mortality has actually weakened it in the western world, and then I don't even remember how we got on the subject but our longest conversation of the night was about Modern Country Music versus Old Country Music and what exactly is meant by Outlaw Country music and then the roots of Blue Grass ending in how we all agree that Willie Nelson seems so darn nice.

Well for a bit my Dad and I got into a discussion of how the free market capitalists <AKA the Corporate Fascists> have fucked the world and our economy including the need to learn survival techniques and stash guns. Till my room mate checked his ass and told them if I end up going sideways she is gonna call him every 20 minutes while she worries till they dig me out.

After that it was MXC videos and turkey... Pretty good day.

Are we picturing a Mad Max type future in this discussion or Grizzly Adams?

For the most part everyone (except me because I was still somewhat shocked by the circumstances) talked about how nice it was to celebrate this family event without my mother. This was actually news to me as I'd been trying to find some way to maintain a relationship with her primarily for the sake of my kiddo's who already don't much family beyond me. Hearing that they were relieved not to have her there was quite teh eye opener for me.

Beyond that we talked about my oldest son's former misconception that Thanksgiving was all about the "gremlins and the Indians" (when he was 5 y/o) and the bizarre journey this ritual has taken between the 1600's and today. We talked about what a harvest feast is and my twins examined each dish in order to determine if it was seasonal and whether or not it had to travel a short or a great distance to reach our table. After dinner we played a few improv games instead of charades so that the 4 younger kiddo's could get involved regardless of their reading level and then we watched "A Chorus Line" and drank sparkling wine. I have no idea whose idea that movie was, but it worked out due to the wine.

All in all it was one of the most ridiculously and unnecessarily dramatic days I've ever had thanks to my Borderline Personality Disordered mother , but it also brought those of us that are capable of forming real bonds with each other that much closer to each other.

We actually had sparkling wine with dinner this year. I wouldn't have thought of pairing that with turkey but Bruce picked out a good one that had very little fizz and it was actually quite nice. I had picked out a Riesling but I ended up liking the sparkling wine better, though the Riesling was still nice.

Wow Yuni, now that you mention it, Obama didn't come up once at our house either..... my brother-in -law a staunch W hater should have led us in a rousing T-day cheer!

We pretty much drifted and jumped. I hope everyone had a wonderful day.

there was a guest-book that our hostess likes to have us sign each year... it becomes like a mini-diary as the years progress... in the diary she asks us to write/sign our name and then what-we-are-thankful-for... as we stood around in a circle, pre-food, for a moment-of-saying-grace (while folks were shuffling-to-join, but prior to the actual-religious-mumbling) - there were several folks who mentioned that they were "thankful that obama got elected".

indeed, of the many/varied conversations that i encountered during the evening - obama, religion (a gal from china - christian - was visiting), the weather, the tattoo and piercing updates, the jobs updates, the pregnancy updates, the where-is-so-and-so updates of non-attendees, old-age infirmities, retirement enjoyments, school-events, different countries to live in (guy from germany was visiting) and countries travel to, and latest electronics discussions were all discussed. that is part of the reason that i enjoy going to this house with their 20-50 family and guests each year... there are always people and discussions for everyone to find interesting.
