I'll second that. A local successful Realtor confided that writing a "free" article on the latest trends in Real Estate was what she used to generate exposure in the local paper. The paper liked it and she was referenced at the end of each article. Huge exposure. Free, minus the time it took to write the article.

Thanks for that, JSin. haha

And I've actually utilized a number of the things Deb mentioned, but perhaps its time to launch them again. I particularly liked her idea bout phone in radio updates, or perhaps I could do weekly PSA's focusing on local area producers along with a plug for a blog with posted recipes using those items.

Last week I left a message for a local television station manager- a station that has already done 3 pieces on me and my biz in the past- to pitch a weekly 3 to 4 minute segment on local foods. I'd love to highlight the producers and sellers along with my own biz. I haven't heard back yet but went ahead and began working on a brief television treatment for the mini spots so I can have something somewhat fleshed out to present him when I contact him again.

I'm also gearing up to promote a local cooking class.

Anyway, I'm just feeling a bit down due to this economic recession...it finally hit me- AND HARD- about 6 weeks ago. I still have a number of great trades going, but no paying clients at the moment, despite a few newspaper ads, flyers, email ads, search engine optimization for my site, etc. I haven't gone this long without an actual income in YEARS. And to be honest, my boobs are just fine. I mean, they're not as perky as Ms. Lumpy Tits/aka the "Natural Chef', but they're still ogleable and hey, they're all MINE. Maybe I ought to focus on finding a low cut, cleavage revealing chef's coat instead? Nevermind the steam burns my girls are likely to receive from such a ridiculous get-up. I NEED to make some $$.

Clearly it is because you are not sucking the right cocks.

That being said it can be tough to make the right contacts in Montana. Not exactly a hot bed of celebrity producers. Likely if you wanted the kind of exposure she is getting a lot of it has to do with having the right contacts and getting people to see what you are bringing to the table. Deb had some good suggestions but I would also add work hard to get a cookbook published even if it is self published. Often that is the first step.

Fake tits may be requisite as well... I know here in vegas I see some of the worst boob installations and we have coupons in the paper for tits. Not my preference but to get exposure that may be what it takes.

I think actually the attention lavished on the hypocrit is likely a result of meeting the right people and bobbing the right knobs more than skill ability and what have you.

It sounds to me as if all that you really want to achieve (I believe) is appreciation and market share in your own community. Here are a few ideas that mesh more closely with your type of Walking the Talk.

The natural way to develop local "celebrity" is to offer a local newspaper or magazine a column that they can print or a one time interview. If you do a column once a week or once a month, ask for free advertising of your services in exchange.

If you write a column for a newspaper be sure to put it on a blog as well.

Do you have a local television network where you could do one show with a local news celebrity? Get advertising for your services.

Is there a local college that teaches food preparation where you could be a guest instructor to teach natural chef principles for one class?

How about a local radio station where you could phone in a report once a week about locally available products in exchange for free advertisement of your services?

Also service clubs are always looking for interesting speakers. They would love to have someone local come to talk to them about food security, food safety and the kinds of local information that you would have.

Is there a local speaker's list at the Chamber of Commerce that you can get your name on?

Once you have this level of media attention, then you can approach local businesses with a brochure or email brochure which includes information about your catering services.

People do seem to look to media to supply experts. If you become the "local expert", more people will become aware of your services. But none of these ideas are crimping your natural style. Maybe you've already done these things but I'm just throwing them out there.

I can thoroughly empathize with your situation. The airheads that are presented on prime time don't have half the knowledge that people in the field like you do but it's their looks that get them on. Eventually people will realize that she's just an airhead.
