Ok so going through a bunch of posted information one of my instructors provided I found a guide that has his by line and claim of authorship on.
Upon doing some unrelated research I came across the original posted on a culinary website. It was not by him. Rather it was written by another respected chef and was more complete than the posted information.
Personally I find plagiarism ethically reprehensible.
Now it gets even more complicated. He is the only ACF certified tester in the Las Vegas area. He hold several certifications with the ACF as well. When I go to get my ACF cert I will have to be evaluated by him unless I want to travel to another state for the evaluation.
So what is a guy to do... Let the flagrant unethical and academically dishonest act pass, or do I report it to the school, should I contact the original author with a copy of what he has put up. Should I possibly contact the ACF and start the ball rolling for stripping him of his credentials.
Most of you know from my postings it is not in may nature to allow this sort of thing to just slide but I do not need my grades and future harmed in trying to do the right thing.

Re: Ethical quandry
Sun, July 19, 2009 - 8:52 AMContact the original author with a copy and where he can find where is was posted, explain to the author why the situation places you in a bad spot so that he wont drag your name in it. Or try to report it anonymously if possible. -

Sun, July 19, 2009 - 8:55 AMIsnt there some policy in place at your school protecting you from retaliation for reporting wrong doing. -

Re: Ethical quandry
Sun, July 19, 2009 - 9:22 AMYou can have all the policies in the world but subtle retaliation could be enough to create serious problems... Max GPA obtainable is 4.0 which I have... does not take many points taken off on subjective areas to drop me to a B+

Sun, July 19, 2009 - 9:33 AMI agree that it would probably be best to alert the author and leave any action up to him.

Sun, July 19, 2009 - 10:37 AMHow much longer until you are done? Can you report it after you have your certification? -

Re: Ethical quandry
Sun, July 19, 2009 - 11:04 AMAbout 2 years left on my Bachelors, I am likely to also run into him on other classes unless he is terminated <which I believe in an academic institution is the proper penalty for academic malfeasance>
I will cert test for CCC in about a year.

Re: Ethical quandry
Sun, July 19, 2009 - 12:00 PMI agree with informing the original author. After all, it's his work that is being plagiarized and it ought to be up to him to decide what, if any, action will be taken. Unfortunately, this doesn't help you in dealing with the fact that you know that this man is in a position of authority without having the level of personal ethics to justify such a position. That sucks and I'm sorry.
(As a side note, I learned the hard way to guard my original recipes after a local Bistro I did pastries for years ago copied several of my original recipes and are still, to this day, serving 3 of them as their own. I have never seen a dime or even honorable mention from these recipes nor can I seek such a thing cuz I didn't safeguard them. I wouldn't have been so upset if I'd developed these recipes FOR this bistro, but these were recipes I'd developed many years earlier. But, now I go ahead and do what I call the poor man's copyright and periodically print out a bunch of my original recipes (the one's I take the time to extract from my brain and actually scrawl down, that is) and send them to myself certified mail and when I receive them I just leave the envelope unopened and file it away. Just thought I'd pass this on to you as you're no doubt coming up with a few fabulous original creations yourself and from what you've said, plagiarism is not unheard of there.)
Best of luck!
